Product Limits and Scope

myCostBase is an ACB and capital gains ledger, not a filing tool or portfolio analytics platform — exactly what is and is not in scope.

myCostBase is focused on adjusted cost base, capital gains reporting, and the review trail behind those numbers. It does not replace tax filing software and it does not try to be a full portfolio analytics platform — it supplies the upstream ACB and gain/loss work those filing tools still expect you to have already done correctly.

Common scope questions

Does myCostBase support cryptocurrency? Not today. The product is scoped to Canadian capital-property ACB for securities, ETFs, and options held in taxable brokerage accounts — crypto’s cost-basis and disposition rules aren’t covered by the current ledger.

Does myCostBase connect directly to my brokerage account? No. There is no direct API sync or read access to any brokerage login. History is loaded through CSV import or manual entry — see Supported Brokers — so nothing is pulled from an account without your file or your input.

Does myCostBase file my tax return? No. It maintains the adjusted cost base ledger and produces the capital gains detail you enter into filing software like TurboTax or StudioTax, rather than filing the return itself — see the pricing FAQ for the full reasoning.

Does myCostBase handle complex corporate actions? Stock splits and returns of capital are covered. Less common actions — mergers, spin-offs, rights offerings — aren’t automated yet and should be entered as manual ACB adjustments.

Does myCostBase group multi-leg option strategies? Each leg of a spread, straddle, or collar is tracked and calculated independently rather than as a named strategy — see Options Transactions and ACB for how single-leg outcomes are handled.

What it covers instead

myCostBase covers single-leg options transactions (buy/write, exercise, assignment, and expiry), CSV imports from all major Canadian brokerages, cross-brokerage ACB pooling, Bank of Canada FX conversion, and ETF return-of-capital and DRIP adjustments — see the Methodology page for the exact rules.
